Hello again, I wanted to show you my work in progress for the Dungeon Delve competition on Art order. I’ve been working on this on and off for the past month or so.
I’m supposed to portray an adventurer who is lost in enemy territory. The full description is here. I came up with the idea of adding a previous adventurer who carved ‘no way out’ on the wall, before his death. I quickly came up with these 3 sketches. In the 1st sketch I was trying to capture the feeling of desperation in the woman’s face. I chose a woman because I thought that people would feel more sympathetic towards a woman and they’re also easier on the eyes =). In the 2nd sketch I wanted to capture the feeling of fear and in the 3rd I wanted to have the adventurer looking at us with hopelessness, almost as if she’s asking us for a way out. After some feedback I decided to go with number 2.
After a few hours of work I ended up with this image.
I took a few days off from painting and came back with a fresh eye. After looking at it for a few minutes, I realized that I painted this with no effort at all and I wasn’t satisfied with it. It felt too claustrophobic and I wasn’t getting the feeling I wanted. It’s an ok painting but I had to push it to another level. I feel that if I’m not struggling with a painting, I won’t learn anything new. I had to step out of my comfort zone and do something else. I wasn’t sure what that was though…
A few days later I was looking through some art and I had an ‘a-ha’ moment. I remember that It was a Sunday and I quickly got out my Wacom and trusty pen and I just zoned out for a few hours and this came out.
I couldn’t stop myself. I remember thinking ‘what am I doing?’ I hadn’t sketched this out or used any reference or played with composition or colors but I just kept going. I was pretty happy with the results. I added so much more depth than in my previous version and I felt happy with it. I had the foundation and now all I had to do was build upon it..All that was left was getting in there and adding detail.
Today I came back to it and I wanted to share what I have so far. I took some pics of myself for ref and added some more detail. Let me know what you guys think. Here is a funny ref shot that I used of my self. =)
